Guhagar is a city in the district of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra state. In local language, ‘Guhagar’ means ‘cave house’. The city is famous for its beaches, betel nuts, coconuts, Alphanso mangoes and coir items.
Geography of Guhagar
Guhagar is situated at 17.47oN 73.2oE and has an elevation of 10 m (33 ft). The city is surrounded by a narrow strip of land of 720 Kms which runs parallel to the coast of Arabian Sea. In Maharashtra, this area is called as ‘Kokan’.
Climate of Guhagar
Tropical climate prevails in Guhagar city. The city also receives significant rainfall during most of the year and it also experiences dry season for a short period of time. Koppen and Geiger have classified the climate of the city as Am. The annual average temperature of the city is 26.9oC and average annual rainfall is 3218 mm. The temperature reaches the maximum during May and it reaches the lowest during February.

This temple is situated at the heart of the Guhagar city near the ST Bus Depot and the presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. For Kokanastha Chitpavan Brahmins, it is the Kuladaivat.
The unspoiled beach comes with calm and serene ambiance and is ideal for meditation, sunbath and relaxation. It is also a perfect place to get away from the cacophony of the city life. The beach is quite safe and the tourists can indulge in water sports, swimming, etc. Many chat stalls have sprung up on the shore.
It is an estuary island situated near Guhagar city and it also has a natural seaport. On this port, activities such as ship building, breaking of old ships; maintenances, etc are carried out. It is also a fishing village and the tourists can interact with the community of fishermen.
This hill is a paradise for trekkers and is situated in Anjanvel village. A fort set up Siddis in 16th century called as Gopalgad Fort is situated here. Later, this fort came under the rule of Shivaji Maharaj. Two small temples as well as a lighthouse are also situated here. From the lighthouse, the tourists can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding places.
This famous temple of Dasabhuja Ganapati is situated 18 Kms away from Guhagar at Hedvi and supposed to have been built during the reign of Peshwas. The idol is made of marble which was brought from Jammu-Kashmir and the temple was renovated recently. Ganesh Janmottasav is celebrated in a grand manner in this temple.
Uma Maheshwari Temple
This temple is situated 3 Kms from Ganesh temple along the sea and is dedicated to Goddess Uma Maheshwari. Sea water splashes into the temple during high tide.
This temple is situated 15 Kms to the north of Guhagar. This temple is found in a cave which is 15-20 ft underground. Only candles and lamps are used inside the temple as the electricity is not allowed. It is believed that the swayamboo idol of Goddess Chandika belongs to the Pandava era. This temple was discovered some 300 years ago and the tomb of the discoverer is found outside this temple.
This famous temple is situated 16 Kms away from Guhagar and the presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. This temple situated on the seashore is the kuladaivat of Kokanastha Chitpavan Brahmins. The temples of Lord Vishnu, Kala Bhairav and Lord Ganesha surround this temple.

How to Reach Guhagar
Guhagar city is well connected by road to other major cities of the Maharashtra state. MSRTC buses as well as private buses operate here. The Maharashtra State Transport Bus Depot is situated in the centre of the city. Guhagar does not have a railway station and the nearest railway station is Chiplun which is 44 Kms away from the Guhagar town. Ratnagiri airport is the nearest airport to Guhagar city which is some 53 Kms away. The tourists can travel by bus or hire a taxi to reach the city.
